The objectives of the Massachusetts 4-H Science Engineering and Technology (SET) Program are:

  1. To increase “SET Abilities” and life skills through positive interactions with others.
  2. To teach scientific principles to young people.
  3. To supplement the current SET programming available under Animal Science
  4. To inform youth about educational opportunities in Science, Engineering and Technology at the University of Massachusetts.

SET is one of National 4-H’s mission mandates and has a goal of reaching 1 Million new youth in Science, Engineering and Technology by 2013. A webcast held on October 11 provided an overview to 4-H’s history, 4-H SET and the Land Grant System. Dr. Cathann Kress, Director of National 4-H Headquarters, Don Floyd from National 4-H Council along with Land-Grant University President, Robert H. “Doc” Foglesong of Mississippi State University are featured speakers along with 4-H Educators and youth talking about their experiences. An archive of the webcast and Q & A can be accessed through www.4-H.org or by clicking here. For more information on the 4-H SET Mission Mandate visit National 4-H Council.

Across Massachusetts the majority of our 4-H youth are already engaged in SET programs with a large percentage focused in Animal Science. This section will serve as a resource for additional programming and resources across fields such as Plant Science, Environmental Science, Geospatial Technology and Aerospace.

Massachusetts 4-H launched its first Science, Engineering and Technology Camp in the Spring of 2007. Along with the addition of this new camp, additional workshops and opportunities are now available at the local and regional levels and a new SET Program Committee has formed.
