Animal Science Program
Horses
No matter what your interest in horses may be, there is something for everyone in the 4-H horse project! Youth involved in the 4-H horse program area learn responsibility and commitment to a project. The time invested in caring for, riding and training horses improves the quality of life for youth while at the same time teaching life and work skills such as time management, record keeping, problem solving, goal setting and many others.
The 4-H Horse Program teaches the care and management of the horse project. Members do not need to own a horse to participate in the 4-H horse project. 4-H members learn about horses at their local 4-H club meetings as well as at state 4-H horse workshops and events. In addition, 4-H members have fun competing in educational contests including horse judging, hippology, public speaking and horse quiz bowl. Older members have the opportunity to compete in these contests at the National 4-H Horse Round-Up in Kentucky. 4-H is not a riding instruction program. That said, 4-H does sponsor horse shows around the state where 4-H members exhibit their riding skills.
For more information, contact your local 4-H office.
Note: Horse Project Verification Forms must be on file in the local 4-H office 90 days before the first 4-H show that the member will participate in that year. April 1st is the deadline if the youth plans to attend the New England 4-H Horse Show at the Eastern States Exposition.
